Nestled between the mountains of the southern Shan State lies one of Myanmar’s top destinations: spectacular Inle Lake. The Lake itself (approx. 20km by 11km) can be found in the Southern Shan Hills, with the scenery providing stunning panoramic views. With its stilted villages, Intha leg-rowing fishermen, floating vegetable gardens and layered mountains as a backdrop, Inle Lake is one of the most unusual and extraordinary places in the World in which to enjoy a hot air balloon flight.
In this unique environment, a hot air balloon flight is an adventure not to be missed. Your day will begin early as you are collected from your hotel. A boat will be on hand to transport you across Inle Lake just as the early morning mist adds surreal vistas during your journey to one of our specially-chosen launch sites, often on the west side of the lake, from where the adventure continues.
Following a comprehensive safety briefing from our experienced UK-licensed Commercial Balloon Pilot, your UK-built balloon will gently lift off, with the pre-dawn mist adding to the magic of your flight. As height is gained, a wonderful panorama unfolds in front of you.
Your flight of around an hour at various heights above the ground and water, will reveal to you the lake, mountains, marshes and stilt-house villages. Driven by the wind, you will see the boats of the lake, motorised canoes transporting visitors along the main canal from Nyaungshwe on a day’s expedition, or Intha fishermen majestically rowing their flat-bottomed skiffs with one leg as they cast their nets.
The wind may take you over one of the markets that rotate around the towns and villages bordering the lake, or perhaps over one of Inle’s famous festivals. You could travel across the bird sanctuary, rich in wildfowl, over teak monasteries, or even to Ywama village with its tall teak stilted houses and its famous floating market. Perhaps then on to the hot springs of Kaung Daing, or to Maing Thauk with its wooden bridge which joins the land-based half of the village with its stilt-house water-based half.
As with all our flights in Myanamar, you will be served fresh tea, coffee and pastries before your flight. After landing, enjoy water, fruit juice, fresh seasonal fruit and a celebratory champagne style chilled sparkling wine in glass flutes whilst the enthusiastic crew pack the balloon away. To commemorate your adventure, you will be presented with a personalised Oriental Ballooning flight certificate signed by the pilot!
If the winds are too light for the balloon to cross the lake, all our Inle pilots are experienced and practised at landing the balloon atop our purpose-built floating balloon platform that follows the balloon all the time. The balloon will then be “sailed” back to shore, adding an extra dimension to your morning’s flight.
An adventure not to be missed in this incredible and unique location!
